There are many reasons why a drug addict uses drugs. To others on the outside looking in, perhaps many of the reasons don’t make a lot of sense and are not worth the destruction that the person is doing to themselves. Let’s take a look at a few reasons that a person could become an addict. Then let’s take a look at the one important reason to quit.
Maybe there are family problems, the person doesn’t get along with their parents, or worse, has no parents. They could be shuffled from one foster home to another, and get the feeling that no one cares for them anyway. How painful it would be to feel this way. The drugs smother the pain and make it go away for a while. Maybe they were abandoned by their parents. Maybe they were abused by someone they trusted. Loss of friends could contribute. Maybe they have a loss of feeling of self-worth. Feeling they let themselves down and did something that was not what they are all about. They lost their self-dignity. Maybe they just want to be cool!
Using the drugs could start out perhaps you tell yourself, to be one of the crowd. But then you do the drugs a second, or third or tenth time, and before you know it, you need this drug to survive you feel. In fact, you end up living to get more drugs. Going from one fix to another, to the next. Ripping off little old ladies for their purses. Stealing from your friends and from strangers to supply the drug so you can survive. If you are lucky you don’t end up behind bars. What you are doing to solve your problem, has become the problem.
You know there is no cure for drug addiction. You are told that over and over when you go for rehab and for help. After all, if there was a cure, well then they authorities wouldn’t want to give you a substitute drug like methadone, would they? Well would they? Would they tell me that I was on this drug likely for life if there was a cure out there? They wouldn’t lie to me would they?
There is hopelessness, despair and apathy. Is this all there is to my life? Can I get help? Who can offer me help?
What is the reason to get off the drugs? Well, the cure is inside you my friend. You are of value, and you can get off drugs. The reason to do this is for you. You are important. You are worthwhile. You can survive.
