Alcoholism affects millions of people around the world. Because society in general has become used to people drinking, it may not always be immediately obvious that someone is becoming an alcoholic. In fact, there are many people who can drink casually for years before even becoming an alcoholic.
If someone is drinking alone, this may be a warning sign of alcoholism. It is known as one indicator that someone may be addicted to alcohol. Normally, drinking is a social situation but if someone starts drinking alone on a regular basis, that should send up a red flag.
If someone shakes or trembles upon waking, this could be another sign of alcoholism. They may also look extremely pale. This is because their body is already craving alcohol. Another warning sign of alcoholism is that they may very well drink first think upon waking. Just as a drug addict needs their drug fix first think when waking, so does the alcoholic. Alcoholics (think) they get very good at making excuses as to why they drink or get drunk. This is another warning signal. Many times, a warning signal may be someone who begins to neglect their grooming or personal appearance.
A sure signal that alcoholism may be present is if an individual drinks on a daily or regular basis. The individual who drinks every day has traveled well into the alcoholism territory and there is cause for concern. Another warning signal is that the individual may begin to eat less and may even lose weight. This is because all they desire is the alcohol and in its own way, alcohol is filling. Many alcoholics lose a great deal of weight. They also begin to look very pale.
If an individual denies drinking, that is almost a certain sign that alcoholism has taken hold. Denial is one of the most recognized symptoms of alcoholism. When confronted, an alcoholic will often become angry and this is another warning sign of alcoholism. Finally, if a person begins to withdraw from family/friend or social activities (especially if they do not involve drinking), this also is a warning sign of alcoholism.
The descent into becoming an alcoholic isn’t always a fast one, but it is very noticeable after time. It also is a heart wrenching journey not only for the alcoholic but for everyone involved with them. The sooner the warning signs are recognized the sooner you or your loved one can seek help.
