What Does Being Addicted to Alcohol Do?

Alcohol is one of the easiest substances to become addicted to.

Teenagers talk about their keg parties out at the lake and do not even realize that some of their friends are becoming alcoholics right then and there.  Alcohol can get passed around at school even easier than drugs can.

The over use of alcohol can harm your brain, your stomach and your liver. You can become addicted to alcohol and it is just as hard to withdraw from it and beat it as it is for any other drug.

Drunk driving incidents are higher than they have been in years.  With the state of the economy people are turning to drinking to forget about their problems for a few hours and then taking the risk of driving home from the bar.  If they do not make it home, it is because alcohol has gotten them stopped (hopefully) or they have sent themselves and/or someone else to the hospital or worse.

Some physicians believe that alcohol is even worse for you than smoking cigarettes.  The over use of alcohol can harm your brain, your stomach and your liver.  You can become addicted to alcohol and it is just as hard to withdraw from it and beat it as it is for any other drug.  Alcoholics Anonymous has been around longer than Narcotics Anonymous; in fact, NA was derived from AA.

What does being addicted to alcohol do? It affects the mind, the body, your entire disposition and spirit.  You feel good while you are partying and are able to forget your troubles for a while and then you wake up with the hangover, the headache and the problems are still there.

Alcoholism is used as an excuse at times also.

A person downplays his actions by saying it was the alcohol and he isn’t really like that but the truth is, alcohol is an addiction and that has become who the person is.  Interventions are advised just as much for a family member with an alcohol problem as they are for any other drug abuser.  A person can wake up in the morning with the need to have a drink just as much as someone needs a “fix” who uses marijuana or cocaine or any other drug.

Alcoholism can also be treated if the person admits to the problem and vows to work to stop drinking just as one has to commit to stopping the use of any other drug.  As stated earlier in the article, it is one of the oldest recognized addictions and has been the cornerstone of other programs.  If you find yourself constantly in need of a drink, reach for the phone and call for help.  You can overcome it if you try.
