Alcoholism is a problem which, contrary to popular belief, can be prevented. There are generally two ways of preventing alcoholism: education and civic action. Education about alcoholism and its effects are extremely important, especially in families where the alcoholism is high. Children especially must be taught the damage that can be done as a result of alcoholism and how it affects not only the alcoholic, but the family, and society as a whole. Many believe that curriculum should be taught in schools that clearly explain alcoholism and that it can be prevented, in very basic terms, by just not taking that first drink. The problem is that many families of alcoholics try to hide the fact that it is a problem. Children and teenagers must know of any history of alcoholism in their family.
There are many bills and laws before lawmakers now concerning alcohol sales. One would prohibit sales of alcohol during the last segments of sporting events. Others concentrate on cracking down on sales of alcohol to minors. Since alcoholism does affect society, some feel that law enforcement may be crucial in reducing the incidents of alcohol related injuries and deaths. People are demanding that law maker’s act. Every year more and more people are killed or injured by drunk drivers as well as domestic violence as a result of alcohol consumption.
Alcoholism is a problem in almost every country of the world. Only by teaching the effects of alcohol and the resulting problems as well as enacting more laws concerning crimes related to alcohol can the problem be given proper attention. Alcoholism is not a disease; it is a choice to take that first drink. With the proper education and laws, more people would avoid that first drink. Knowledge IS power and that power must be put into the hands of our collective society in order to save lives and prevent the destruction of families.
Alcoholism prevention means bringing the problem out into the light. Many people understandably are uncomfortable with this. However, it is the only way to prevent future generations from falling into the same trap. Alcoholism is an extremely serious problem that affects so many people. Alcoholism can be prevented, but first, it must be brought out into the open. Young people should be taught the severity of the condition and also ways to prevent becoming a statistic of alcoholism themselves.
