I remember when my family first confronted me with the issue and all of the indicators they had spotted; it was Christmas Day 2005, what a Christmas!!! At that point my parents did not reach out to professionals who deal in addictions, instead they figured they knew best and kept a close eye on me, but that did nothing to stop the drug use. Over the following year I manipulated my way around any conversation that dealt with me and was critical of everyone else so no attention would be on me.

As a Counselor working extensively with the public on projects such as intervention, family consultation and drug education I come across family members or friends of addicts doing the leg work and research in locating suitable treatment for their loved one. They do this because the addict is at a loss of control to actually help themselves a lot of the time. Basically the family or friends have had enough of the addict’s behavior and are not willing to see the individual destroy him or herself any longer.

Over the years as an Addictions Counselor, especially in the most recent years I have come across individuals addicted to oxycotin more so than crack, cocaine, heroin and others. Oxycontin is obtained through Doctors, or on the street from dealers. It will give the individual a high similar to high-grade heroin. The addiction is extremely powerful, and causes cravings mentally and physically, extremely irrational decisions are made by the individuals taking the drug motivating them to seek to drug any way they know how.
