How a Family is Affected by Cocaine Use
- a Message to Cocaine Addicts
If you do not think your family is affected by your cocaine use, then you are definitely in denial. A family can actually be hurt even more by the use of cocaine than the addict himself is. If you are a cocaine user, do not be surprised if your teenager develops a drug problem. The only role model he or she sees is you and your cocaine use is seen as much more important than your family is. You may not think so but that is true.
Parents, spouses, significant others, siblings and children all bear the brunt of the consequences and ramifications of cocaine use. Families can be financially ruined, jobs lost, legal expenses incurred, and children taken away. Every time you get ready to take part in cocaine use, remember that you are choosing to put your family at risk.
The family of a cocaine user often feels shame and bewilderment. Confusion is rampant as they try to deal with the repercussions of a beloved one’s number one priority in life, being how and when to get that next “fix”. A parent’s worst nightmare is more likely to happen when a teenager is a cocaine user. Every phone call brings with it a touch of fear that something has happened to their child or because of their child.
The legal expenses of keeping a cocaine user out of jail is not an exaggeration. If the cocaine user is the breadwinner of the family, sometimes the spouse is blindsided when the foreclosure notice is presented or when the bank closes the account because the checks for the bills keep bouncing as the money was needed elsewhere: for cocaine.

If you are using cocaine and you think this article is melodramatic, spend some time at a Cocaine Anonymous for Families meeting. Listen to the horror stories of those who loved someone just as your family loves you and how their lives were destroyed by cocaine addiction. Do you really want that to happen to your family? Do you want your child taken away and put into foster care because you cared more about cocaine than you did about him or her? Do you want to take the chance that your toddler may accidentally ingest the powder you left out after your “partying” the night before?
Look at your family. They love you. Listen to them as they direct you to rehab. Accept responsibility and change the future by fighting your cocaine addiction.
If you are reading this and you are a drug user or have a family member addicted to cocaine, it is not too late.
