Brian hit her on the driver side, and Emily was killed instantly. Her car ended up almost two blocks up the street, and rolled over close to half a dozen times before hitting a building. Brian had broken his leg, arm, and some bones in his face from hitting the airbag, and was kept in custody while being treated in the hospital. The police reported Brian was five times over the legal limit, and in fact, also had large quantities of marijuana in his system. Brian had a long history of alcohol abuse, and was in some pretty close calls while driving drunk before. I guess because he never got caught by the police, or was in any previous accidents, he thought he was capable of driving while intoxicated. At first, it all seemed unreal to Brian that he had actually killed somebody. Emily was a 19-year-old university student in her first year of school. She was on her way home that Friday night to see her parents for the weekend, just like she did on every other Friday night. A young woman with a bright future, and now, all that was gone.
Soon after Brian was released from the hospital, the court proceedings had started. Fortunately for Brian, his family managed to post bail, which kept him out of jail for the time being. During the proceedings, Brian was beginning to disconnect from his environment, and found himself incapable of functioning day to day. The only way Brian knew how to make the pain and anguish disappear, was to drink it away. He was losing hope, and was completely giving up on himself. His drinking was at a point where there was not a single day he was sober. His entire life was all falling out from underneath him, and there was nothing more he could do to keep it together. By the end of everything, Brian was sentenced to jail, and was ordered to attend alcohol treatment. During the entire hearing in court, Brian was never able to look at Emily’s family. He was completely unable to deal with the guilt and remorse. He had taken the life of another person because of his choice to drink and drive. Brian’s own addiction to drugs and alcohol has now taken every remaining part of his life away from him, and in the process he has taken away a families only daughter.
