Drug addiction tears families apart everyday. A drug user will put themselves through so much pain and suffering, and their immediate family and loved ones will feel it with them. Every now and then there is a glimmer of hope that families can come back together and no longer focus on the pain. The following is a true story.
Sabrina openly admitted when she was using drugs, she wanted nothing to do with her family. “I was a terrible sister, even before drugs,” said Sabrina in her interview, “when I started using drugs, I wasn’t at home. I was leaving more and more – I didn’t think about her.” (referring to her sister) “ I never noticed her, I don’t remember her at that time.” One of the major reasons Sabrina sought help was for her family; however, when she was in the middle of her addiction she had a different view of her family. “I tried to make sure they were as far away from me as possible, I didn’t want to think about them. I didn’t want to have a family.” Tears begun to fall when the sisters began to talk about how Sabrina’s drug use affected their mother. “I think my mom felt very alone and that she failed,” comments Sam, “She became very sad, like in a very depressive way. I hated the fact she was putting my parents through that.”
Sabrina could barley hold back the tears when talking about her mother, it was a difficult subject for her to discuss. “She tried to help a lot,” said Sabrina, “I could tell that she was very sad, she wanted me to come home; she was blaming herself – it wasn’t her fault.” Now over ten years later, these two ladies are closer than ever, and have both grown significantly having gone through so much. Sabrina, after completing the Narconon drug rehab program embraces the time she now spends with her sister. “Why did I even hate her?” comments Sabrina, “All those years we could have been playing dress up and make up, going out checking out boys.” Sabrina could not get the smiles off her face. Sam said in her interview: “We have grown so very close, we even use to live together at one point.”
