How Can I Help?

As a Counselor working extensively with the public on projects such as intervention, family consultation and drug education I come across family members or friends of addicts doing the leg work and research in locating suitable rehab centers for their loved one.  They do this because the addict is at a loss of control to actually help themselves a lot of the time.  Basically the family or friends have had enough of the addict’s behavior and are not willing to see the individual destroy him or herself any longer.  At this point I analyze the situation and often deploy an intervention team, or if the addict has spoken of his or her need for help I will get on the phone and get in communication with the addicts themselves and get them involved in a treatment program.  When the addict has said that they are ready and do want the help we make the process from home into the program of choice very quick and painless.  Good quality centers will have 24hour intake, be familiar with local transit systems including plane, bus and train, and also accommodate international clients with all of the necessary assistance.  The Staff at these rehab centers will also be available at any hour to assist the family in any aspect of this process and to be a main support system for the family and addict alike.

I hear from families a lot… “I do not want to push my son/daughter too much, it has to be his/her decision”, this is partially true, yes the addict has to be willing, and willingness to participate in treatment can be found using professional interventionists, or speaking with good, qualified Counselors.  Secondly, think about it the addict has generally lost control of his or her life and is sinking fast…

TAKE CONTROL OF THE ADDICT!!  HELP HIM/HER!!

You can either contribute to the problem or be a part of the solution, and in order to be a part of the solution you have to confront the problem and take control.

    Thanks for the post.
An intervention is most always tricky to put together because of the fact families feel they may lose their loved one for good. But, the alternative is that their loved one could die if they don’t try an intervention.
