How to Deal with the Drug Addict in Your Life

The first and most important step for anyone who wants to quit doing drugs is to first realize that they have a problem.

Suggest this article to a drug addict. It will help him!

While recognizing there is a problem in first place may be the most important step in beating a drug addiction, it definitely is the first of many to follow.

Because people are different, they tend to recognize their problem in many different ways.   While it may take losing everything for one person to finally see that they have a problem, the realization may come for another after missing a few deadlines at work, or after an intervention from family.

Admitting you have a problem doesn’t necessarily mean that you’ll right away be ready to find a recovery program.   Even if you find yourself wanting to quit, the allure of the drug may be telling you otherwise, creating an internal struggle between you and the addiction.

It won’t be easy, but you can recover and quit doing drugs.

It won’t be easy, but you can recover and quit doing drugs.  Once you’ve made that commitment to yourself to stop the drugs, the first thing you may want to do is inform your loved ones, and friends who aren’t also struggling with addiction.   Any friends who are struggling with their own addiction issues aren’t going to be helpful. They’re going to see this choice as a threat, and you as no longer being ‘fun’ and will encourage you to continue, even if they don’t realize they are doing so.  As difficult as it may be, it’s best to try to break all contact with those friends and lean on those non-addict friends or family members who can give you encouragement and support you need.

Before the withdrawal process begins, find a reputable rehab facility and check in.  Inform your family and friends and if possible invite them to go along with you as support.

If you are concerned that the temptation to buy drugs will be too much if you have access to cash, ask someone who you trust if they will be willing to take care of your finances until you feel more secure in your recovery process.

Remember this process isn’t an easy one, and will come with good and bad days, but you can do it.  Getting involved in a church and a 12-step program can also be beneficial to helping you get through this time in your life, and remember that even if you have a set back, that it isn’t the end of the road.  Keep trying and stay committed to yourself, your program, and you will be successful.

My brother is an addict who gets well for 2 or 3 days..but then goes right back to it… he lies all the time. All he really ever is thinking about is how he is gonna fake it and make us believe him, that he has quit. But then get the money from us then run off for a week to go get high… all he is ever thinkin about is how to get the next bump… we want to believe him. But every single time he proves us wrong again… we think ok he is doing good, but then he does it again. It seems like we are being used to me.
So how should we deal with this?? Any comments would be much appreciated.

I completely understand your situation, and it is a very difficult one to be in, especially when it impacts the entire family. It seems that everyone in the family knows what is going on, and this would be the best time to confront him or perform some type of intervention. You are probably thinking that he would never listen to the family or would jut run away, this may be so, but if he see's that the family has come together as one unit and is drawing a line in the sand it will have an impact. You can also look at the option of hiring professional intervention counselors, whom can also help your family help your brother. The problem with addiction is, it will never go away for the family or give the family any piece of mind until some hard actions are taken. its not easy to do and your family may have some real hesitation, but you have to remind yourself that you love him, but it is OK to not like what he is doing. I hope this helps, and please if you require any further assistance do let me know.
