Meaning and Definition of Drug Addiction

The definition of drug addiction is the habitual repetition of consuming drugs regardless of the known or unknown consequences.

Once a person has become addicted to a drug (or alcohol) the need to consume more and more takes precedence over everything else in their lives.  Addiction takes the form of physical addiction, which means that the body will exhibit adverse reactions if the drug is not taken.  There are also psychological affects to the addiction, which can range from irritation to extreme violence if the addict cannot get the drug.

Drug addictions are not voluntary.

Drug addictions are not voluntary. Taking that first “hit” of a drug may be voluntary but the addiction is totally out of the person’s control.  Once the addiction has started, normally the only way to end the addiction is through rehabilitation.  There are techniques used which combat the natural reactions of the person getting off of the drug.  The only way to defeat a drug addiction is to end the use of the drug and to educate the addict on how to empower themselves against a relapse.

A drug habit and a drug addiction can be two different things. There are those who truly use drugs, such as marijuana only on rare occasions.  For some reason, these people have not become addicted.  With an addiction, the person must have the drug almost constantly, no matter what.  Neither situation is healthy since it is uncertain if someone with a drug habit may eventually become an addict.  It is best not to play roulette with drugs at all. If you, or someone you love uses drugs or has a drug addiction, seek help immediately.  There are things both of you can do to empower yourselves against the consequences of the drug.  Family members and friends suffer just as much through a drug addiction as those who are addicted.

With a drug addiction, the need for the drug becomes stronger and stronger until that is all that matters.  The addict loses interest in all else and may even begin to steal to obtain the drug.  Their entire personality changes.  This is all a part of the addiction and something loved ones should be looking out for.  A drug addiction is no passing phase. The quicker help is sought, the better off everyone will be. Get drug rehab help now!
