Memorial Day and Drugs

memorial day and drugs 300x231 Memorial Day and DrugsMemorial Day is a holiday which first and foremost is meant for honoring those who have passed away and especially those who have served in the armed forces. For most people, it is also the unofficial start to “summer” which means barbeques and celebrations. Many people partake in alcoholic beverages on this and every holiday. Some choose to make it a good excuse to imbibe in drug use. This is also one of the reasons that this and every holiday turns out to be deadly.

Most drug addicts (and alcoholics) don’t really need a reason to use but a holiday gives them a good excuse. They claim they are celebrating, just like everyone else. It seems to be a strange way to honor those who have passed before us, doesn’t it?  The fact is, their actions are not in memoriam to anyone, they are just part of the addiction.

Drug use increases on holidays, including Memorial Day because they are a part of the get-togethers that many people have. Marijuana is commonly used at many Memorial Day celebrations. In fact, alcohol and marijuana are both a part of many Memorial Day celebrations. Other drugs are used as well, just not in as open manner as alcohol and marijuana.

Obviously, there is no thought put into the fact that abusing drugs and drinking alcohol does not honor anyone. It is just another excuse; one of many. Many people don’t give a second thought when they see a loved one drink or use drugs on holidays. The problem is; they are going to be doing it the day after as well, and the day after that. To really celebrate the spirit of Memorial Day; getting the addict help would be more in order. Make Memorial Day their first drug-free day. Now, THAT would make a fitting memorial to anyone.

There are people who celebrate Memorial Day and honor their deceased loved ones without having to use alcohol and drugs. They have just as much fun and enjoy the holiday just the same. Memorial Day is a day for families and friends. It is a day to remember those who have gone before us. Unfortunately, it often turns out to be a day when more people die and many times as a result of drugs and alcohol use. The only way to prevent more useless deaths is by acting. Get help, or if you are a loved one, get help for your friend or family member.
