For those of us who have never struggled with drug or other types of substance abuse, it’s almost impossible for us to understand how a person could become an addict. Many of us find ourselves thinking that the person should walk away from the destructive behavior and do as the anti-drug campaigns have said for years- “Just say no”. While saying no is definitely the best defense on ever becoming addicted to any substance; if you have a predisposition to addiction and have already said yes, it is no longer as simple as saying no.

You may notice that those who are struggling with drug addiction tend to carry a great deal of guilt.
For years society has put a stigma on those who struggle from drug addiction, as being a certain type or social status, but nothing could be more inaccurate. The truth is, addiction does not know what your financial status is, whether you come from a gated community or a low-income housing development. Addiction doesn’t care what nationality you are, nor does it care about the color of your skin. Drug addiction can strike anyone, at any time, at any age, and doesn’t discriminate.
You may notice that those who are struggling with drug addiction tend to carry a great deal of guilt. In their moments of despair they will feel as though they have no control over their life and the drug is the only thing that is in control. No drug addict wants or enjoys being an addict. Many lose their jobs, their families, their children, and everything they’ve worked hard for.
Even though they may want to stop, and many drug addicts do, they may find that they fail again and again after attempting to stop on their own. The urge becomes too great and they find themselves succumbing to the addiction, and the cycle of self-loathing and frustration continues.
In order to overcome drug addiction, it’s important to understand the reason behind the addiction in the first place. Getting to the root of the problem, learning to work through the issue and having the tools to deal with whatever you may face in the future is an important aspect to overcoming addiction. Many reputable rehabilitation facilities offer not only a freedom from drugs, but also teach coping skills on how to deal with certain situations so that they can face their problems head on, instead of turning to drugs for comfort.
