Understanding Drug Addiction

As with anything else, some people judge drug addiction without understanding it.  Some people do not know that it is considered a disease as well as an addiction.  We tend to be harsher at times with those addicted to drugs than those who were born with a mental disorder.  Yet drug addiction can impair the brain and have other physical and psychological impacts on a person.

Sometimes the greatest critics are family members; they can also be the greatest supporters.  A drug rehab center can help a family to understand drug addiction and the fact that it not only affects the person who is on drugs but them as well.

Statistics show us that people die from cancer, heart and circulatory problems every day.  How many of those deaths were caused by a drug problem?  The details are not always available.  A person can die of lung cancer and people assume they were a heavy smoker.  Yet they may not have ever smoked a day in their life.  Someone else could have circulatory problems that lead to death.  That person could have been the healthiest member of his family until he got addicted to drugs.

Sometimes people think a person gets addicted to drugs because they want to.

Drug addiction does not discriminate and sometimes people just do not understand that.  One person can party, have a few drinks and go on.  Another has just taken the first step to a lifetime of alcoholism.    Perhaps it was due to something genetic; perhaps it was just the bad luck of the draw.  Whatever the case, one person’s addiction is another person’s criticism.  Instead, educational knowledge about what drug addiction is, how it works, what it can do to a person physically and psychologically as well as family members, is what needs to be taught and understood.

Sometimes people think a person gets hooked on drugs because they want to.  Yet there are those who never had a drug or alcohol problem who find themselves on a prescription pain reliever due to an accident or medical situation and then find themselves unwittingly and unintentionally having a drug addiction, proving once again that drug addiction?  Does not discriminate.

If you have a loved one with a drug addiction, call a helpline or a drug rehab center. Tell the intake counselor what is going on.  Let him or her know you are confused and do not understand certain things.  The counselor will help you find the right path for your situation and help you to understand whether you are dealing with a drug addiction.  Once this is done, things can move into place to help your loved one, you and the rest of the family recover.  How?  Because you will be connecting with people who were where you are today; and they will understand.

I wish it was as simple as making a different choice to stop using drugs. The truth is, what started as something I thought was fun – turned into a life of needing to use just to feel OK with who I was. I don’t think anyone WANTS to live that way. Recovery tells me that I lost to power of choice when I became an Alcoholic/Addict – I know this to be true because I could not function (go to work, get out of bed, run errands) until I put some chemical into my body. Sounds to me like I didn’t really have choice in the matter. You would more than likely do the same if you had to use to function properly!

I think that its all about choice.A person chooses to say yes to drugs or No to drugs. If one person tries it and chooses to try it again or not, its a choice.I think that genetics and a peoples personal experiences have something to do with wheather  a person becomes a drug user or a drug abuser.

The obvious thing is that drugs do make a person feel good.Cocaine, meth, heroin, pot, you name it,  you will probably feel good.Drugs will also make you feel bad, mentally, emotionally and physically  and that is why drugs are considered bad.

A person who chooses to abuse drugs  and live on the streets is more concerning than someone who has a job and pays rent or mortage and also uses drugs  on occasion. If a person is happy and feels good there is no reason to use drugs. If a person is depressed and down most of the time they will be more likely to become an abuser rather than a user.

A happy cofident person will have an easier time controlling there drug use than a person who lacks cofidence and is unhappy.I also believe that its not the drug that is necesarily bad, its the dose that can be dangerous. If you use a bit and feel good for awhile, thats not too bad.You wake up, you feel alright, and you get on with your day/life.If you use too much and die, that is bad.

Like I said in the begining its all about choice, not just with drugs, everything. How we think  act and feel is closely connected with the choices we make.We are our only problem and our only solution.Drugs are also not the problem or the solution. Its the person who chooses wheather or not to use or abuse drugs. All the Best to Everybody Everywhere.
