Battling drug addiction will be a very tough battle. You can battle your drug addiction as long as you arm yourself with the best research and resources available. Drug rehab counselors are there to help you however, where drug rehab counselors will give you great advice you must understand that there are certain things a drug rehab counselor should NOT be telling you.
- You are not responsible for your drug addiction. This is absolutely false and you must realize that you are indeed responsible for your drug addiction. This is the first step in recovery in admitting you have a drug problem along with taking full responsibility for what you have done.
- You have to utilize drugs in order to combat your drug addiction. This is sometimes true but you must understand that not everyone has to have drugs in order to overcome their addictions. It is not the best alternative to trade one addiction for another addiction.
- Being addicted to pot or commonly called marijuana is better than being addicted to other so-called heavy drugs. An addiction is an addiction no matter the drugs involved. One addiction is not easier to beat in comparison to others. All drug addictions are hard to overcome.
- You are a bad human being because you abuse drugs. It is true that people who are addicted to drugs allow the drugs to rule their actions however, once you kick your addiction, you will be able to allow your personality to shine through once again. You will have to confront the actions you performed while being addicted to drugs but the drugs did not make you a horrible person.

- You are not responsible for what you did while abusing drugs. This is very far from the truth. As part of your recovery you will have to account and confront the actions you performed not only to yourself while abusing drugs but to other people. You might even have to go to jail for things you performed while abusing drugs but this is a necessary step in overcoming your addiction while facing the reality of what you have done while abusing drugs.
- Drug rehab can last only a couple of days or weeks. This is not always true. Sometimes it takes years for drug users to kick their addictions. It takes much shorter time for other people. You must understand that everyone is different and the amount of time it takes in kicking your drug habit can vary.
- Everyone will automatically forgive you. This is nice to hear however it is not true. Your drug rehab counselor cannot read the minds of your loved ones. You have to face the reality that you might not be forgiven. You will have to earn the respect of those who will not forgive you. This is typical and normal and do not give up hope for more times to none when people view you clean from drugs while remaining clean, they will come back into your life when it feels right for them.
- Once you kick your drug habits you will never be tempted to use drugs again. No self-respecting drug rehab counselor should ever utter those words to a patient. Over a period of time you will find it much easier in dealing with your addiction however, you must avoid what is called trigger mechanisms, which could possibly lead you back into the world of drug abuse. This is something you must abide by for the rest of your life not for a trial period after drug rehab.
- Your life will go back to normal once you kick your drug habit. You will never be able to pick up your life where you left it before indulging into drug abuse. Your life has changed as well as the lives of your loved ones. All involved must accept the positive changes and live your lives accordingly as compared to the past.
- Drug rehab is easy. This is a blatant lie! Drug rehab is not easy in fact it’s difficult. You will have to face yourself as well as the physical addiction and some people have compared this period of their lives to hell. Where this is a scary thought and seems impossible, I’m here to tell you, it is not. Many people have triumphed in drug rehab and you can too.
