It is true that much advancement has been made to help ease the discomfort of the withdrawal symptoms but detox is still not an easy thing to go through.

There is no “one size fits all” program.

All people are different. Since that is a given, it only goes to prove that one set of programs cannot work for everyone. A drug and/or alcohol rehab program should be tailor made to suit each individual.

Sometimes, rehab has to be repeated.

It would be wonderful if everyone succeeded on their first try at rehab but unfortunately, sometimes it takes two or more tries to finally become drug-free. The important thing is to keep trying.

You don’t have to have drugs to get off of drugs.

Some facilities use substitute drugs on a patient who is detoxing from an addiction. Basically, it is substituting one drug for another. There are more natural and healthier ways to detoxify the body than by introducing different drugs.

Inpatient rehab for more than 30 days is most successful.

Many people have the mistaken belief that after a week or two of rehab; they are ready to go back to their old life. That is the problem, most are not ready to face the temptations of their old life after that short of a time frame.

Even once you are clean and not addicted, there might still be times you may be tempted to use drugs.

The temptation may always be there, but you will have learned some techniques in rehab to help you turn away from those temptations.

You should make a new life for yourself.

It just doesn’t make sense to go through rehab if you are going to return to the old lifestyle, the old partying friends and the old habits. Start with a clean slate. Meet new people, start a new life for yourself.

Starting drugs is not a disease.

Taking that first hit of a drug, or taking that first hit again after drug rehab; those are choices plain and simple. You have the choice to say no and walk away. Addiction only occurs once you start taking the drugs.

You have control over your life.

Even if you may not have control while the addiction is running its course, you will have once you have gone through detox and rehab. It is then up to you to make the right decisions. No one is forcing you to take drugs or drink alcohol.

All treatment centers are not created equal.

Different rehabilitation centers have different mission statements, code of ethics, treatment plans and theories. You should never randomly choose a rehabilitation center. Choose one that fits your needs and desires.

I agree with this, especially the sentiment that relapse is a part of the recovery process, and that you never fully conquer addiction and will battle it at some level for the rest of your life.  This is knowledge that needs to be told to every patient.  They need to know these things up front so they can commit to an authentic recovery.
