When a person has become addicted to drugs, their entire lives can spin out of control. The drug, and the addiction take over their whole life. In many cases, the drug addiction continues for some time before help is sought. It is no secret that it will take intensive treatment in order to provide the healing necessary for the drug addiction.

Residential treatment centers are often for a period of time of 45 days or greater. There are times that people spend months at the center. It all depends on when the individual is ready to leave. One advantage of being at a residential drug treatment center is that the individual is in neutral territory. They are not among the people, places and things that may trigger drug use. Instead, they are surrounded by a friendly, helpful environment with trained staff available 24/7. It takes time and it takes space to heal from a drug addiction and that is what residential treatment offers.

Another advantage would be access to help and information. The staff at a residential treatment center is well trained in all aspects of rehabilitation. They have seen it all and heard it all. Individuals who are there for rehab can be comfortable in all stages of their healing because they are not being judged or scrutinized by anyone. Recovering from drug addiction takes all of an individual’s time and attention. It is a time to concentrate on healing and rehab, not everyday stresses that may occur.

What may be the greatest advantage of a residential drug treatment center is the fact that there is no temptation. Obviously, an individual would not be able to get their hands on drugs. Rehabilitation is sometimes a tough process and in a residential setting, the temptation is removed. All efforts in rehab should be toward healing and becoming whole again; mind, body and soul. An individual with an addiction should be in a safe, caring environment and have access to the best drug rehab treatments available. For a time, it is all about the addict until they are in a place mentally to begin to consider their loved ones and others in the community and in their lives. The alternative, which is outpatient services leaves too much of a gap. There is too much time and space to allow the addiction to take control of the individual, which leads to relapse.
