Difference between Inpatient and Outpatient Drug Rehab

All rehabs are not the same.  Just as inpatient and outpatient drug rehab are not the same.  What is the difference between inpatient and outpatient drug rehab?  The obvious answer to that is that during inpatient rehab, the patient stays at the rehab center; during outpatient rehab, the patient does not reside at the drug rehab center.  When recommending drug rehab, professional counselors recommend inpatient treatment more than outpatient treatment.   The reason being, that it is extremely difficult to control the addict if he is a rehab outpatient.

Can a drug addict be trusted to go through detox and rid his body of the abused substance while still living at home in the same environment he became addicted in?  Can he really be trusted to be in contact with his old acquaintances, some of whom may have been his drug suppliers?  Outpatient rehab, although it may work for some, would obviously be very difficult for most. The rehab treatment which is currently having the best results is to totally change every aspect of the addict’s environment.  This cannot be done through outpatient rehab.

Narconon is an inpatient drug rehab.

Inpatient rehab requires the addict to actually leave home and stay in a rehabilitation center for a recommended period of time.  Before any real counseling can begin, the addict’s body must go through detox and become substance free.  Inpatient rehab has the therapeutic environment needed for this detox period.  Again, this step must be completed before the counselors may begin teaching the addict a new, drug-free way of thinking.

After the body is free of the addictive substance, the counselors may begin detoxing the addicts mind.  Much of this is achieved by having changed both the inpatient’s physical environment, as well as his social environment.  The final goal is to help the addict realize that he will have to make changes in every aspect of his life, for him to successfully remain drug-free.

Inpatient rehab removes the daily stress of being in contact with the people who may try to persuade him to continue his drug use.  There are pros and cons of inpatient drug rehab, make sure you read them. Contact with these people is the number one cause of an addict’s relapse back into drug use. The following statement was made to me by a twenty six year old recovering addict (who wishes to remain anonymous).  The young man had previously gone through an inpatient drug rehab program.  “Familiar people, places, and things draw an addict back to his old habits faster than anything.”
