While sons and daughters both have an important role in the family; it is our sons who carry on the family name. Our sons are expected to be stronger than daughters, so when drug abuse hits a family through their son, it is often emotionally challenging. The truth is; more men do become addicted to drugs than women.
Choosing a drug treatment center for a son does not have to be difficult, however. A center that practices holistic healing is the first thing to look for. Holistic treatment takes care the mind, body and spirit. Since drugs affect every part of a person, the entire person has to be treated. Simply treating the physical affects, for instance, will only lead to a temporary recovery. When a person becomes addicted to drugs, their body craves the drug, their mind craves it and their soul, or spirit craves it.
Choosing a treatment center which does NOT use substitute drugs during detoxification is also important. The idea is to rid the body of all drugs and not replace one drug with another. Since there are many centers that use this policy, it is best to have it checked out before entering your son into that rehab.
Talking to the drug counselors also helps. Although at some point, your son will clash with his counselor, knowing the counselor is well trained and a truly caring professional will help. The counselor is there to listen, but also to point out why drugs should not be used. They also point out the hurt it causes loved ones and family members. Sometimes, the addict does not want to hear that, but they must.
Treatment centers that offer longer term stays are more successful. Drug addiction cannot be beaten in the course of a day or two. Residential programs are the best and have the most success. Out-patient programs quite simply are not effective. A drug addict must be removed from their normal environment in order for rehabilitation to work properly.
Every parent wants what is best for their son. All it takes is a little checking into the different rehab programs. It could mean the difference between success and failure. A few phone calls and visits now could mean a happier and brighter future for your son. Remember, the most important things to remember are; drug-free treatment and holistic treatment.
