When you are looking for a treatment facility, choosing the right treatment center can be a nightmare.
The following questions could arise:
- Should I attend long-term treatment?
- Will an outpatient rehab center be enough for my addiction?
- Is it better to be out of my immediate environment?
- What is the best philosophy of treatment?
- Do I need detox before entering a program?
All these questions can be very confusing and even more confusing when you call the different facilities. You will hear different answers from every different location. Why is that? It all comes down to the philosophy of the program. For example the twelve-step model believes that addiction is a disease and you will be an addict or an alcoholic all your life. They also believe that relapse is part of the process to become drug or alcohol free. It also teaches to leave their lives in the care of a higher power. Some people have success with this method of treatment, but the success can be short term, because they believe that relapse is possible.

Biophysical treatment has the opposite philosophy. The addict or alcoholic will have to get in the driver’s seat with their addiction and will also learn how to overcome their addiction through different life skills classes, and also get to the root of the problems and learning the tools to manage their life. The way you look at your addiction is the foundation and also is what opens the door to a solution.
Addiction is no different than life in general. The only way out is to take responsibility for it. For example, if you have a problem with your spouse you must be able to communicate about the problem. This will allow an individual to share the responsibility of the problem and make sure the situation will get solved one way or the other. This is the same for your job, social life, etc.
This is the missing element of some treatment programs as they do not put the addict in the driver’s seat and do not allow the person to take control of their life. There is no way to fully handle a situation if you are the victim of something or if you tell yourself “It is a disease, it is normal to relapse” and so on. So when you choose a drug rehab program, be the judge of what is the best for you or a loved one, and go with a program that opens the door to a solution.
