  • In 2006 2.1 million teens abused prescription drugs
  • Everyday, 2500 youth between 12 to 17 abuse pain medication for the first time
  • One third of new abusers in 2006 were between the ages of 12 and 17
  • Prescription drugs are the drugs of choice for youth between 12 and 13 years old
  • 60% of 12 to 17 year old prescription pain medication abusers tried for the first time before the age of 15
  • 18% of these abusers used on a weekly basis within the last year

  • Vicodin and oxycontin are the most commonly used
  • OxyContin abuse among youth in the 12 grade increased by 30% between 2002 and 2007

    I've been having problems with addiction on pills for most of my life and I only went for an 12 step rehab program because my husband was going to leave me if I didn't. The perspective of suddenly being alone hurt more than my pride of not admitting I had a problem. So the family support is crucial in these situations.
