It takes a certain type of person to be a drug counselor. Not everyone is cut out for the job. A genuine concern and understanding of the problem of drug addiction and those afflicted with it are a good start. Someone who will be able to separate behavior caused by drug withdrawal and personal remarks would do well in drug counseling.

Learning the different drugs and how they affect a person is one of the first things a counselor learns. Different drugs affect people in many ways. Learning what causes the addiction is another important aspect of drug counseling. The addict spends most of their time in rehabilitation with the drug counselor, making them a very important part of the addiction recovery team.

The role of a drug counselor is not always an easy one. Drugs affect the mind, body and soul and they must all be addressed. The addict will often lash out verbally at drug counselors because it is part of the withdrawal and the counselor is the closest person at that moment. Drug counselors often have their own support system, often within their workplace, which helps eliminate some stress that can arise.

Then again, they also get to see that same person walk out of the facility happy and drug-free.

    Becoming a addiction counselor can be a very rewardung career. The profession requires a multi level training and educational tract. When working with the addicited individual the couselor will see many “faces” of the individual. This article touches on the “ugly” side and also the “happy and drug-free” side.
    There are many “turns” the individual will take in between those two sides and these “turns” are where the challenges occur, that require training and undersatnding the effects drugs have on the mind, body and soul.

    The field of addiction counseling is constantly changing as the field continues to grow with medical, psychological and spiritual understnading of the life of an addicted person.
