These drugs fall into a category all by themselves. Anti-psychotics can be very mentally and even physically destructive to a person. All anti-psychotics are psychoactive drugs, which are typically used to treat psychosis. The majority if not all of antis-psychotics where developed back in the 1950’s, these were considered first generation anti-psychotics. Some of these drugs where not used for clinical use until the 1970’s. It was only by chance that anti-psychotics where developed; in fact, one of the first drugs were originally used as a surgical anesthetic. When tried on psychiatric patients, it produced a very strong calming effect. Unfortunately, the drug was referred to as a “chemical lobotomy”.
The purpose of anti-psychotics is to block specific receptors in the brain, mainly the receptors that control our motivation, ability to learn, and our motor movement. Side effects from taking these drugs can include the following:
- Psychosis
- Hypotension
- Impotence
- Lethargy
- Intense dreams or nightmares
- Seizures
- Death
Anti-psychotics will also negatively influence a person’s perception, such as, feeling of pleasure. These drugs will also reduce drastically, a persons desires and motivation, and will effect their short-term memory, making learning more difficult.
When a drug user experiences a drug psychosis, which is the point where the mind and body have been pushed to the absolute limits. It is not uncommon for that drug user to be put on some form of anti-psychotic. This can and will potentially cause more harm then good for a drug user. Street drugs and anti-psychotics could possibly increase the risk of brain damage and or long term, and even permanent psychosis. The drug user could also become physically and mentally dependent on a more dangerous drug, which might not have been needed in the first place.
There are specifically designed procedures developed today to help those individuals whom wish to look at alternative more natural methods to treat psychosis, and or come off of their anti-psychotics. The best initial approach is to speak to a qualified medical professional, and inquire as to what avenues are right for you.
