

MDMA was created in 1912 by chemist Anton Kollisch, and was forgotten about for over 65 years. Throughout that time, many experiments and scientific studies were conducted with the drug to determine its potential uses. MDMA first appeared on the street in the 1970’s, its popularity grew at that time because of its use for Psychotherapy. In 1980, the drug appeared throughout the nightclub scene, and in the late 1980’s it was widely used within the “rave” culture. MDMA eventually grew to become one of the most widely used illicit drugs, and became a popular drug amongst first time users.
The effects of MDMA happen within 30-60 minutes of use, and will last up to four to six hours. The side effects include:

The chronic use of MDMA will lead to increased rates of depression and anxiety, and will effect long-term memory and will produce severe cognitive impairment. Studies are on going concerning the long-term effects of MDMA. However, the short-term effects are very real and potentially deadly. In recent media in Alberta, a teenage girl of 14 years old died due to a ecstasy overdose while attending a party at the West Edmonton Mall.
