Strangely but accurately enough heroin is not the most addictive drug psychologically, nicotine is, and also contrary to general popular belief it is not the only drug that causes physical addiction, so does alcohol. Nevertheless the combination of being the second most psychologically addictive drug and the drug with the strongest physical addiction makes it the hardest drug to quit.
During the 1970’s and 1980’s a new method was beginning to gain popularity that was supposed to appease the withdrawal symptoms of heroin addiction. Namely the addicts that underwent the detoxification process were given a new form of drinkable liquid pharmaceutical morphine called methadone. Opposed to heroin methadone has no mental effect and was only supposed to ease the physical withdrawal symptoms of heroin consumption. Unfortunately for the addicts as well as the medical workers the system didn’t work out and it seems to have caused more damage then reparations. In most cases the addicts that used methadone regained the heroin habit and others have just substituted the heroin for the methadone habit.
Many rehab centers have and still use methadone in order to appease the very painful heroin withdrawal symptoms and while the addicts remain in the rehab center it seems to work, but the actual problem begins to surface when the addict has substituted heroin for methadone since methadone has similar withdrawal symptoms as heroin.
The withdrawal symptoms for heroin are also referred to as “cold turkey,” the popular name originates from the shivers that a heroin addict has due to the cold that is part of the withdrawal symptoms along with head, joint and belly ache. It is a very painful process that also includes diarrhea and a running nose that can last up to two weeks depending on how long and how often the addict used to consume heroin.
Methadone does help the addict overcome those withdrawal symptoms and eases the pain but the same effect can be achieved with natural methods without actually hooking the addict on a new drug. Not all drug rehab centers use methadone but use a combination of traditional pain killers with traditional tranquilizers like valium, which can be as counterproductive since both painkillers and traditional tranquilizers also create addiction and the effect tends to be the same, the addict changes illegal for legal drugs.
As usual the natural way seems to be the hardest but is also the most effective way to do anything including getting off drugs. All the other ways are deceptive one way or the other. We are not supposed to intake any substances including salt and sugar that have no proper nutritional use and damage our bodies, but in today’ s world where we are constantly bombarded by commercials offering legal drugs and junk food it is very hard to stay natural.
