When parents find out their children are using drugs, they can normally be taken quite off guard. Many parents ask, what do we do when the find this out. A good approach to take is, find out why your child or children started taking drugs, and help them resolve the reason why they started using drugs to begin with. There are some effective ways to show your child how drugs can be harmful to them, such as, have your child talk to emergency room staff at a hospital that does see many drug cases coming in. Your child can also talk to former addicts
, and get a real life perspective from people who have been there before. Most importantly, do not ignore the fact that your child is using drugs, always take the time and care to find out why they started using drugs. Keep calm, ask questions, and always listen to what they have to say. Taking this approach will allow the real problems to come to the surface, and then you can now solve them. You will be surprised at how effectively you can help them by just letting them talk to you.
After all is said and done, and your child feels more comfortable, and you have figured out why they have started using in the first place, it is a good idea to get them productive. Have your son or daughter get a job, or do some community service. This will give them a sense of purpose, and will allow them to help others. You can also have them sign an agreement stating they will never use drugs and alcohol or break the rules anymore.
