Are Drug Rehab Centers Necessary?

Many believe that drug rehab centers were necessary to recover their loved ones from addiction

An addict’s mind and body is essentially held captive by his or her incessant need to consume drugs, alcohol or other substances. However, that doesn’t mean that addicts don’t have the ability to break free. As long as an addict has enough motivation to get rid of addiction, drug rehab centers are always available as soon as they believe they are ready to make a change. The question to be asked then is which of the many substance abuse recovery programs is right for a certain individual.

Many addicts turn to 12-step substance abuse recovery programs. These programs essentially operate on a set of principles that serve as a guide for addicts towards getting rid of their addictions. These recovery programs usually include meetings where recovering addicts get the chance to express themselves, listen and interact with substance abuse counselors and fellow addicts without the fear of being judged. Examples of 12-step substance abuse recovery programs include Alcoholics Anonymous, Cocaine Anonymous and Narcotics Anonymous.

While the 12-step programs are some of the most widely known treatment methods for addicts, there are alternatives to them.

Self Management and Recovery Training (SMART) is based on the principles of Rational Emotive Therapy. This substance abuse recovery program uses a methodology that teaches that addictions are learned behaviors caused by self-defeating ways of thinking. SMART contends that you can change the way you think and get rid of your destructive behaviors.

Rational Recovery (RR) is based on the Addictive Voice Recognition Technique (AVRT). This substance abuse recovery program encourages addicts to use a problem solving approach with addiction and simply make a promise of abstinence. Members liken it to “getting fed up and simply quitting”. This substance abuse recovery program also says that participation in recovery groups like AA is not necessary once you have learned AVRT. RR views the perpetual attendance of such groups as an addiction in and of itself.

Women for Sobriety (WFS) is the oldest non 12-step substance abuse recovery program in existence. It is base on the Positive Thinking, Metaphysics, Meditation, Group Dynamics and Pursuit of Health Through Nutrition. This substance abuse recovery program emphasizes the unique problems that women deal with in recovery. WFS believes that addiction comes from coping with stress and emotional deprivation and that recovery comes from self-knowledge and abstinence.

There is also the Narconon drug & alcohol rehabilitation program. It uses a 100% holistic, drug-free and natural approach combined with extensive life skills and educational models treatment. Additionally Narconon has an unique biophysical detoxification program which gives the recovering addicts an opportunity to naturally clean their body out of drugs, alcohol toxins and poisons.

Beating an addiction on your own is a hard task. The best chances for a successful and long-term recovery is to seek help from a drug rehab program that best suits you to help you cope with the physical and psychological pressures of kicking addiction to the curb. There are a number of rehab centers to choose from but whichever program you settle on, keep in mind that what matters most is not the cost or the name but how well it works for you.
