With street names such as hillbilly heroin, oxy, OC, the powerful pain killer known as oxycontin is extremely dangerous because while effective as a painkiller, it’s also highly addictive. There generally seems to be a stigma that is associated with heroin, cocaine, and other drug users that isn’t always prevalent with those who find themselves addicted to prescription narcotics.
While some of us would never imagine taking heroin or cocaine, finding that we’ve been diagnosed with cancer or any other condition, which leaves us in chronic pain, is enough to warrant a prescription for this powerful drug. In most cases the person uses the medication as directed, but when they don’t, addiction is possible or even likely.
It isn’t just those who are prescribed the drug that are becoming addicted. Because of its potency, many people are stealing the drugs from family members or friends for recreational use, or even purchasing the drugs on the street. Often the tablets are crushed to remove the time-release coating so that the moment the person consumes the drug they receive an immediate high. Oxycontin can be consumed in several ways; dissolved in water and then injected, it can be snorted up the nose, or it can be consumed orally.

Many people find Oxycontin attractive because it gives that general feel good or euphoric feeling that so many people associate with a good time. It offers a feeling of temporary comfort, and just like many other drugs, Oxycontin users will build a tolerance to the drug over time and require more and more in order to be able to reach the same high as before.
Most people who find themselves addicted to Oxycontin are unable to stop taking the drug on their own, even if the desire is there to stop. The desire and craving can be overwhelming causing the person to resort to using again. One of the best ways to overcome Oxycontin addiction is to find a drug and substance abuse rehabilitation facility, which offers in house treatment. By checking into an inpatient facility, this will keep the addict from being able to contact anyone who could get them the drugs, and in the meantime they can begin the recovery process.
If you suspect someone you love of being addicted to oxycontin, reach out to the person and offer to help them find a facility to get help. If they aren’t willing to get help, all you can do is offer to be there when they are ready and let them know of your concerns. Don’t enable them by offering them money or a place to stay. If they are ready to get help, be prepared ahead of time by having information on treatment facilities in your area that can help them on the road to recovery.
