What You Should Know About Oxycontin Abuse

Because of the growing number of people dying due to oxycontin abuse, it is important to know that because this particular drug contains oxycodone in its purest form, it is often abused. It is not mixed with an over the counter analgesic like most other pain medications and therefore is more likely to be abused. People by-pass the time-release action of the medication by crushing or chewing it in order to achieve the full effect of the Oxycodone. Others mix the powder with water and inject it, making it a drug very similar to Heroin.

An alarming number of people have died from Oxycontin abuse. Because one of the major side effects of the drug is respiratory depression, taking too much of the drug can lead to cardio-pulmonary problems. Oxycontin is known as “the poor mans Heroin” and people who have never injected drugs before are using Oxy intravenously. Ironically, the high street value of the drug causes many people to turn to the lower priced Heroin when they are unable to satisfy their Oxycontin abuse. Many people also crush the pill and snort the powder. These methods deliver straight Oxycodone directly into the system. People do not realize how easy it is to overdose from Oxycontin abuse.

Oxycontin abuse can easily become deadly, particularly if the abuser is taking other medications or drinking alcohol. The number of poly-pharmaceutical deaths (taking more than one drug) is astounding. Teenagers have an alarming death rate due to this practice. People are either prescribed or illegally taking medications like Xanax, then taking the Oxycontin on top of that. Many other people consume alcohol (also a drug) either before or after taking the Oxycontin. Alarmingly, Oxycontin abuse is beginning to take the lead in drug related deaths across America, especially on the east coast.

Unfortunately, the phrases “drug abuse” and “drug addiction” have been used for so long that some do not stop to realize the impact. Family members have to bury their loved ones because of Oxycontin abuse and it is happening more and more frequently. Emergency rooms are seeing more people coming in with side effects of Oxycontin abuse. It is not a joke, and it is not an over-statement. Oxycontin abuse can and does kill. A drug that was supposedly manufactured to ease the discomfort of people in extreme pain has instead become many abusers drug of choice.

If you have a loved one who is addicted to Oxycontin, get him or her to check in an effective drug rehab, before it is too late.

oxycontin abuse is slowly becoming more and more common. Many people are abusing prescription drugs because they are so readily available and they do not have the stigma of illegal drugs. According to drug-addiction-support.org, “Oxycontin abuse and oxycontin addiction cost Americans over $484 billion annually.” This figure includes healthcare costs, job wages, motor vehicle accidents, crime and also other criminal justice system costs. 484 billion is a staggering number and obviously signals that something needs to be done to solve this problem. Unfortunately abuse of substances will always be present in society. There are steps that can be taken so that individuals can drastically reduce the number of people that are abusing these drugs. Prescription drug abuse is a social problem and therefore will require a large movement on the part of law enforcement, civilians, and politicians to solve this problem. There is no easy solution to this problem. Addressing prescription drug abuse will also lead us to confront issues such as crime, poverty, and other various large scale problems that have been present in society for hundreds of years. Although the task is daunting, the first steps are vital to solving the problem. Educating young children seriously at an early age would greatly decrease the likelihood that the children would abuse prescription drugs. More importantly, taking an active interest in the communities that have the highest rates of prescription drug abuse and finding out why these communities are like this would enable activists to learn how to contain and hopefully stop future generations from abusing drugs like Oxycontin.

I have been so out of touch with this world and the issues within, and because of this system failure brought on by this 9/11 , War and the Scams that brought the American People to their knees. I am a little bit angry, because some one said to me why, why Mr. Massingale do you persist? Because I choose to. I do not belong in this world of a Matrix, that most hold in the hearts as if it is all that.
Now people do not feel that addicts need help within this Health Care Bill. Let me show you how wrong you are and I did give warning that I would write words in to this Matrix that would shake the

Prescription Drugs Match Heroin, Cocaine in Overdoses in U.S.
    June 17, 2010, 1:06 PM EDT
    By Tom Randall
June 17 (Bloomberg) — Emergency-room visits from abuse of prescription and over-the-counter medicines doubled in the U.S. in four years, matching for the first time the number of overdoses of illegal drugs such as cocaine and heroin.
Regulator-approved treatments were implicated in a record 1 million patients who sought help at hospital emergency departments in 2008, twice the number as in 2004, according to a study released today by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, in Atlanta. Overdoses from illicit drugs were unchanged, at 1 million emergency visits.
The most hospitalizations were caused by painkillers, with visits more than doubling, and tranquilizers, with an 89 percent increase. King Pharmaceuticals Inc., in Bristol Tennessee, and Purdue Pharma LP, in Stamford, Connecticut, won approval in the last year for drugs to prevent misuse. A half-dozen drugmakers are developing pain pills that resist abuse methods such as crushing, dissolving in alcohol, and taking more than needed.
“Additional measures are needed urgently,” researchers wrote in the CDC’s Morbidity & Mortality Weekly Report. “Recent public health and law enforcement measures intended to prevent nonmedical use of such drugs have not prevented rate increases.”
The biggest increase in emergency visits was from adults in their 20s, according to the study. The researchers analyzed reports from 220 emergency departments across the U.S. to estimate the nation’s tally.
