Substance abuse can prove to be disastrous not only to the physical and mental well-being of the addict in question; it has graver consequences than that. It can lead to irreversible disruption in a person’s family. Families usually find it very difficult to deal with the addict because of fear and to some extent even passive guilt. In today’s day and age, families are becoming increasingly divided, resulting in a communication gap between members living even under the same roof. However, the discovery that any one member of the family is involved in addiction can strike a blow to everyone in the family.

Upon discovery that the son or daughter of the house is in addict, the parents are likely to either blame themselves or each other for the event.
It can lead to severe conflicts between them. There is guilt and anger involved. It may be difficult for the family to approach the addict in a direct manner.
If a husband or wife has been discovered to be an addict, it could lead to divorce or separation. There could be severe financial problems in case an earning member has been found to be an addict. The effects on the children can be disastrous due to constant squabbling at home.
Many a times they are afraid of the social stigma likely to occur when others find out that a member is in a rehab. However, they need to understand what’s best for them and then make an informed decision. The family may be devastated inwardly but they need to be very patient and supportive while the patient is undergoing treatment, take counseling as well. The family needs to understand the entire scenario from the addict’s perspective. They need to be responsive to the patient’s needs. The whole family needs time and support to deal with the situation. They need to figure out in what way they may have been responsible for the condition the addict is currently in and they need to work on that. They need to be bonded together while the patient is healing.
While the patient is in the rehab, the family also needs to undergo counseling to help cope with the situation and help in whatever way possible.
