Your Teenager and Substance Abuse Addiction

Studies have proven that not only are more teenagers experimenting with drugs, but more are actually becoming addicted to them. For many parents, this is a nightmare come true. Sometimes addiction can be difficult to detect with a teenager because they are already going through personality changes due to adolescence. Parents are right to worry and be suspicious however. If a parent suspects that drugs or alcohol may be a part of their child’s life, they should be ready to act.

However, if it is accompanied by physical signs, then confrontation and seeking help may be right around the corner. Depending on which substance the teenager is taking, the symptoms may be different. For many, the symptoms include a rapid heart rate, euphoria, pin-point or dilated pupils are a few of the more common indications. Rapid speech and easy excitability may be others. If alcohol is involved, the smell of alcohol on their person is a very good indication that there is trouble.

Even children who have never stolen before will resort to stealing, even from their parents, in order to obtain drugs and alcohol. If money suddenly begins to come up missing, it may be an indicator that something is wrong. Also, if the teenager begins disappearing for days and claims to be staying with friends, it might warrant further investigation. They are smart enough to know that if they come home while under the influence, they may be discovered. Of course, there is a point in addiction where the teenager feels that they have everyone fooled and no one will figure it out.

Communication is not always easy with a teenager. When the teen has a substance abuse addiction problem, communication becomes nearly impossible. The parents, if substance abuse is suspected, should seek help immediately for their teenager. Ignoring the problem will not make it go away. If the teenager claims they do not want or need help, intervention may be necessary. Contact a holistic substance abuse addiction treatment center for information on how to plan out the best intervention. Also make sure that the center does not substitute one drug for another, which is common for many of them. The idea is to rid the body of drugs and not to substitute them by more chemicals.
