Just like drugs, alcohol is equally detrimental to your body and can result in life altering consequences. Most often, people start out as casual or social drinkers but fail to realize when it turns into an addiction. The problem with alcoholism is the inability to stop drinking once you have started. It may have started as a way to relieve yourself of the stress of a bad breakup, loss of job etc. or it may have crept up as tolerance to it increases.

How’s everyone doing at Narconon? One day when I’m not so busy I would like to come and say hi to everyone and get some of those wonderful hugs I got when I left, very caring loving people work there and that feeling has never left me. I started my electrical apprenticeship 8 years ago and it’s only supposed to take 4 years to accomplish a journeyman license. I am now a second year apprentice in school studying to be a 3rd year.

Someone who is a friend and colleague of yours has been acting strangely lately. Normally a punctual individual, she is late to work and social events and, when the option is available, she drinks far more than you remember her ever drinking. She also seems to have stopped looking after herself and she seems almost apathetic about occasions and people you know she normally does not. You suspect it’s possible that she’s developed alcoholic tendencies.

What many people may not consider is that when abused, alcohol can be extremely detrimental to the health and in some cases cause death. The effects of alcohol are caused when the alcohol is consumed by drinking it and it absorbs into the bloodstream through the stomach. Another factor which comes into play with the effects of alcohol is the amount of food the person has consumed before they begin drinking.

Neither alcoholism nor substance (drug) abuse is a disease. In recent years, it has become a popular theory that both are diseases and the addict himself is ‘sick’ with addiction. This line of thought gives the alcoholic/addict an easy out—they can’t help their drinking or using drugs because they are sick. The truth is both alcohol and drugs are addictive; the user wants and needs more and more of his abused substance. Both actually do affect the user’s brain, but it is not a brain disease.

Drinking in moderation usually doesn’t cause any serious health problems, unless the person drinking already had some disease of the liver, gastrointestinal tract, kidneys, brain, or nervous system.
Alcohol abuse and addiction lead to emotional problems. Continued abuse and addiction affects the entire body system in many different ways. The following list of health effects caused by long term use of alcohol is by no means complete.

There is only one surefire way not fall to into a pattern of addiction with drugs and alcohol: just say no. Sure, you want to have fun, you want to let loose with your friends and hang out, but some things come with a price and this is how many addictions are started. So how do you deal with a situation where friends or peer pressure are encouraging you to do something that is not right and can lead to an addiction? Here are some pointers.

What is a drug addict? It is someone who has fallen victim to substance abuse. Most of the time this starts out unintentionally. No one wakes up one morning and decides I’m going to become a drug addict today. What is the definition of a drug addict? A dependency on drugs or alcohol without being able to stop on one’s own is the most definitive definition of a drug addict.
