For many years, Canada has been struggling, as is much of the world, with how to combat the problem of drug addiction. It seems that many of the methods for treatment of both alcohol and drugs have not curtailed the increased use. What is needed, then, is reliable drug rehabilitation that will not only address the drug use, but the reasons that the person uses the drugs.

There is an entirely new form of drug addiction that is on the rise in Ontario: Oxycontin drug addiction. That’s right. More and more people are falling victim to prescription drug addiction; they legally get a prescription drug because of an ailment or injury and then they become controlled by it. The people who find themselves with this particular drug addiction are caught in a catch-22.

The statistics in Canada for drug addiction have gotten significantly higher in the last ten years. In the 1990s, according to the CFDP (Canadian Foundation for Drug Policy), marijuana use was up while cocaine and heroin use were down. Just ten years later in 2007, Statistics Canada reported that drug related offenses were at a 30 year high in Canada. On top of this is the number of people who use drugs who are not caught in the legal web which would make the count even higher.

In Canada, a single pot plant could land a person six months in jail. In the U.S., if drugs are found in a defendant’s home, the entire home is at risk of being confiscated depending on the amount found. It’s hard to imagine this when hanging out, especially in a place like a party or dealer’s house, where being high seems so normal.

With Canada being one of the top distributors and producers of synthetic drugs, according to the United Nations 2009 Drug Report, it makes sense for the illicit drug crimes to be on a continuous rise in the country.
