Completely ridding the body of the offending drug is the first step in beating drug addiction. The drug builds up in the body which intensifies the craving and need for more. Once it is out of the body completely, the rest of the program is easier. For those undergoing detoxification, great strides have been made in helping to ease the symptoms of withdrawal.

Well, I have been putting this off for a while now. Not because I don’t want to tell the world the story of my success, but because there are no words to do the journey justice. I have as of today, been sober 1 year. I am a 22-year-old single mother. I left home when I was 14, because already I couldn’t face my mother in the condition I was in. I was already using PCP and Cocaine, soon after I was selling drugs. I used cocaine heavy for years and smoked crack. Because of this, and the lack of sleep I started using prescription drugs to sleep. I needed to be high night and day. I was going through withdrawals in my sleep, waking me in 2-hour intervals.

Living with a recovering drug addict is one of the hardest things a person can do and yet it is done every day because of one of the simplest and purest reasons there are: love. Whether it is a child, a sibling, a parent, or a spouse, people live with recovering drug addicts and the pros and cons of that on a daily basis. Everyone makes mistakes. Drug addiction is controlling and a person’s mistake becomes a situation that they no longer have control over.

The first step in recovering from drug addiction is first admitting that you do have a drug addiction problem. This is the hardest step to take in dealing with drug addiction. This does not mean that someone has all of a sudden realized that they are addicted to drugs. Drug addicts know from the beginning of their addiction but most are in denial because let’s face facts here, drug addiction is a horrible thing and is viewed by drug addicts as a weakness.

Being addicted to drugs is rough and can be a hard battle to win, but it can be won. However, being addicted to drugs while pregnant can be a battle someone innocent never should have to fight. If you find yourself pregnant while under drug addiction, be open and honest with your doctor. Tell him immediately because the development effects of children born to drug addiction can be permanent.
